Weekend Peek In #12

Week 12 is here! This week's reader's question leaves us asking, "What if?"

If you wouldn't have chosen teaching as your career, what do you think you would have become?.

I have so many jobs I'd love to do! Let's explore a few:

Neo-natal nurse? Few things tug at my heart more than brand new babies, particularly wee ones with special medical needs like my granddaughter, pictured below. She took an emergency helicopter ride with paramedics to a St. Louis hospital when she was thirteen days old.

Historian? Every community should have a museum of local history. Interviewing residents, collecting memorabilia, taking photos, and building displays are tasks right up my alley.

Archaeologist? Unearthing artifacts to study how people lived in other cultures and other eras would be an adventure. And of course, I'd have my camera ready to document each finding!

Shopkeeper? I sometimes dream of owning a quaint boutique, a place with atmosphere where townsfolk could hang out, sip coffee, browse books, purchase flowers, and listen to live music--my husband on piano, my daughter on guitar, my son on . . . tuba? Okay, maybe I'd nix the tuba--even if he did make All-State Band.

Of course, I have experience in other areas besides teaching--art, photography, and floral designing, to name a few. But for me, the career of all careers encompasses these professions and more.

If I could choose a profession besides teaching, I'd become a novelist! Fiction writers are blessed to experience a multitude of careers vicariously through their characters. Hmmmm. I think I'll give it a whirl! :-)

What if YOU had chosen a different career? What would you be doing now? Please share your dream job in the comment section below. And don't forget to enter my Share the Gift Double Kindle 3G Giveaway!

  2. I have always dreamed of having a craft/book/coffee shop! I enjoy doing my own crafts as well as admiring others people's. I love books. Just being around them gives me a high! For me, spending a day in a large bookstore is equivalent to some people spending the day at an amusement park. And last but not least I am a coffee junkie! So, if I could put those three loves into a shop I would have heaven on earth. (But in today's economy it will have to be a dream unfullfilled.)

  3. Wendy and "Anonymous," how EXCITING! We could be business partners with our shared dream--co-owners of a Coffee House Extravaganza. Java, art, crafts, books, flowers, music . . . I can envision (and smell!) it now. What if? Oh, isn't it fun to dream?

  4. I love what I do! Writing! But I think it would have been cool to be an anthropologist and study other cultures and lives. I'd focus my studies in Egypt. :) Fun!

  5. All you coffee connoisseurs would love Jessica's yummy blog today at http://jessicarpatch.blogspot.com/2011/10/im-lush.html.

Jessica, your readers, including me, love what you do, too! Hey, if we combined our writing talents and your anthropology interests with my archaeology bent, we could co-author some mighty fine documentaries--complete with pictures. When's the next flight to Egypt? ;-)

  6. I agree, there are so many things I wish I could do. I also have always wanted to own coffee/book shop. So if you ever open one then I call dibs on working there :) I'd love to be a photographer (which I hopefully will accomplish), a writer, an artist, or a book publisher, I think, since I would love to get paid to read for a living! As always I love your blog Diana!

  7. Oh and I forgot that I'd love to have a store or shop that catered to twins. Its so expensive to buy everything in pairs, I think it would be awesome to have something where you could purchase things in pairs, or a buy one get one type deal.

  8. Heather, not only would I hire you to work in my coffee/book shop, I'd let you sell your photography there--and those adorable crocheted hats you make, too! I agree, getting paid to read for a living would be a dream job. Thanks for stopping by again today. You're so talented; I look forward to great things from you in the future. :-)

  10. Diana,
What a thought-provoking question! I don't think I could have chosen a better career than Nursing. I lived the career of my dreams-working with adults and children in hospital, camp, hospice, community health settings. Additionally, I taught nursing students and at one point had my own nursing educational consulting business. Now I'm living my other dream of being a writer. I feel so blessed :-)

  11. Kathleen, what a blessing indeed to follow one dream career with another. I have no doubt that your patients and students are thankful you chose a nursing career first, and I imagine your nursing experience gives you a wealth of memories to write about. I hope to read your memoir someday. Thanks for sharing!
